AB-Flug GTM Pink Spyder
AB-Flug. In 1999 they built this car for the Tokyo Auto Salon. They always had a love or hate style, but this one really touched the boundaries. For me it's both. Some parts are absolutely amazing and others are absolutely tacky.
The GTM styling kit is one of the most aggressive available for the FD. With the huge front hole and the extended indicators, it resembles more of a Jet fighter than a car. I think it should have been painted Air Force Grey, but AB-Flug chose this Metallic pink! Did it get your attention?
AB-Flug uses the Curve design studio for their design work and as the name suggests its about curves, but they also seem to like hard straight edges in between. Does it work? On this car i think it does. The way the wide body fenders create the race look and extend toward the rear of the car is pretty cool. At the time it must have been shocking and inspired a few other tuners in the process.
The rear treatment is interesting, Wheels of their own design are spaced outwards and the central exhaust seems to accentuate width. The rear reflector pods are hidden in bumper recesses and the huge wing ( modified from a GTM wing with movable center) would make reversing a tricky situation.
The engine in this car is show quality, polished high horsepower 13b with all the trimmings. The biggest point of the engine bay is the dry carbon air intake that pokes through the awesome dry carbon bonnet. When I saw this car in 2003 at Fuji I was blown away. In person it carries a pressence that has to be admired. A few extra canards and a splitter were added at that time.
And the final question. "Does this car get used or is it a show car?" It's from Japan. you better believe it does.
