GT-3 RS-R Concept

What is the perfect car? Many consider the Porsche 911 GT3 RS to be one such for consideration. I've been thinking a lot about how far to tune a car recently and what a good approach to this may be.

Porsche could build an ultimate 800hp car for street and track, but they don't. They don't even use turbochargers. They don't put too much stress on componentry and beef up the areas that need it, like brakes. But thier car is incredibly expensive. For a fraction of the cost. Lets set some limits for tuning and reliability and produce an ultimate track day street performer FD3s.

Rodenstock FD Concept

I was doodling recently in my little note pad. I came up with this puppy.
It reminded me of the Rodenstock Celica in a way, so I came home and did a little photoshop.
While not as extreme as the drawing. It works. BTW... Enkei RP-01 in 18".. YAAA!

Knight Sports - Since 1971

When I saw this T-shirt at Tokyo Auto Salon, I just had to have it. Both concieved in the same year, I share a little in common with knight sports and their philosophy. When you talk to the guys from KS and share their passion. Life is good.

I also love the Japlish. But I'm going to correct some small mistakes so you can better feel their passion.

"When you sit in the driver's seat and grab the steering wheel, you start to talk with your rotary.
Your rotary responds to a gentle pedal touch as your joyous heart feels the power.
A quick, powerful drive with cool looks. 'The Dream of Rotary Enthusiasts'
We wish to pursue our technical studies with experience and fullest passion to realize this dream."

Budget Drift

The FD has performed well in D1 reaching the top on many occasions.

Suenaga, Ryuji, Takayama, Imamura and a long list of others have tasted the greatness. But apart from big dollar machines, the FD rarely makes it to the local drift track. Until recently.

If you can't afford a D1 car, how far can you go. D1SL...?

Or something pretty cool, but on a budget.

Lets take a look at some of the factors in question. There are a few things that need to be adressed. Remember, once you decide to drift. This is no longer a street car. It will be rough, get thrashed and probably crashed, so sacrifices must be made for the slide.

1. Chassis and reinforcement.
A. The PPF power plant frame is a weakpoint in the FD. When you start twisting the chassis on full slide, it will rip itself apart quite readily. Upgrade this and if you have the funds go some chassis welds.

B. The engine mounts are a known weakpoint and definately require a soild alternative, diff mounts and gearbox mount frame should almost round out the changes.

C. One more item. Engine torque braces. fore and aft in the engine bay. This will not only prevent the on off throttle drivetrain twist, but also help smooth shift work.

2. Knuckles. You don't get to be like my hero Asamoto without them.
The FD is also known for limited steering angle. Often coming ... like me. Unstuck on my first track drift session. Big angle for correcting is a must. Drift knuckles are a reqirement. Many companies are making knuckles. Satoru works and others, but R-Magic are the most well known selling these.

If you do fit big angle knuckles. BE AWARE. On full lock front lower A arms will be munched by normal offset wheels.

So you have some choices .

3. A-Arms vs Spacers.

Ikeya formula and others make a different design to allow for max angle but at an expense. So the alternative is Spacers or big offset wheels for extra clearance but this second option leads to more issues.

4.Wide body.

Adding 30mm spacers will require +30mm fenders at least.. With normal +38 OFF and a 30mm spacer you should be fine. But max turn angle will still hit on many things. Under fender wiring is always a touchy subject. so when you have the fenders off,  relocate that and check other clearances.

If you do decide to get new wheels/tyres then think of the size/power situation.

Case Study 1.
265ps. NORMAL.

Front 18x9JF x10JR +38 +30 spacer with ......... 215 F 225R Streeeeeeech but perfect fun.

Why? because the traction of the chassis will simply grip up with 265rears.
Tokyo Drift Veilside Fortune FD ran 295 rears but 2/3rds were carved out to allow for reduction of grip.
Only one car was 500hp. Others were normal 265 or so, it was necessary.

To over come this situation add power.
But we know what happens then.

500hp creates a tyre shredding monster. High grip tyres like Neova will dissappear very quickly and you'd better upgrade every other possible component at the same time.

6. Fuel
Full slide will also force the fuel in the tank to flow over the standard baffle. Better insert a cheap baffle plate to correct this.

7. Cooling.
The final part of the equation is normal reliability issues with rotary cooling. Intercooler/radiator upgrades should be investigated.

If you've got all this sorted, see you at the track. Mad'mikes car wasn't always a 4rotor. You'll be hooked.

Fujita Eng and Advan. Depth perception. Fujita Streeter.
For me, TAS was ALL about texture this year. As companies search for something that hasn't been done before or continue refinement. They have turned their attention past and through carbon to rubber, vinyl, aluminium, steel, paint, leather, glass, L.E.D, and everything else. These are all parts of the FD3s. Some more recognisable than others. The real, the fake, the bold and destructive.

I usually don't, but a tactile experience was required this year. The surfaces were not smooth. Looking was not enough.

There'll be more to come. I'm trying to give you a "feel" for the Tokyo Auto Salon. Not just a look.

More textures here on RE-Xtreme Extra.

SAB Kobe. In the Sunshine.

Minasan! Genki! - 7

You've seen the rear, Now let's look around the car.

Under the rear are 19"x10" Enkei GTC +22 with 275/30/19 and the fronts aren't much different 19"x9.5" Enkei GTC +22 with 245/35/19

To help create the stance of this car are top of the line RE-Amemiya SPL Quantum dampers with F16K and R18K super stiff Swift springs.

Under the bonnet, is no different. Only top spec items.  Side port engine with 3mm Super Apex seals, Level Man V-Mount, Greddy TD07S 25G turbine with external C-type wastegate (0.8), nismo fuel pump and Profec B control fuel and boost. Serious.

Along with aero, it all combines to propel this car to insane speed.

Front lights are custom IPF lights inside with Lotus Exige covers.

A closer look reveals the Carbon lip with undertray. As the stickers read. Advan Neova AD08 are the tyre of choice.

This car is seriously wide. The Mazda Taiki concept inspired fenders and lines flow well on the car. It's just the wheel covers that scream to be taken off. (as posted earlier.)

Mirrors are RE-Amemiya Super Mirror with a few mods. Interior is blue suede with white meter.

The new shade of blue chosen by RE-Amemiya is a lot more suited to this car. It makes the ugly parts less so and the agressive parts moreso.

Minasan (everybody) Genki (feel great). The Genki 7 inspires. Good and Bad.

Next Up?
