7's Day Preview

It's only April, but time will pass quickly. This shot on the way home from 7's Day last year was taken by Daniel out the window of my car. The tamonster as I call it cuts a nice image on the street. 

7's day this year was mentioned to be back at Tsukuba in full force. So get your stuff ready for 7 July. Still promises to be massive!

Mini Mini Choro Q

Wow! These little guys are Takara Tomy Mini Mini Choro Q tuning car series. They are tiny! These are FREE with your Wanda coffee, so if you're in town for Auto Salon be sure to get some on top of your cans.

The FD3s is a Mazdaspeed R-Spec with great detail for something so small and there are GTR, S2000 and EVO and Legacy. I already have some others from previous releases. But these RX7s are cool. I drank a lot of coffee today. hehe.

FE3s Concept

Whats the FE3s... E for (dare I say the word) Eco.

Tokyo Motor Show '09 and Tokyo Auto Salon '10 are going to feature "Eco" concepts. What does the FD have to become for it to be Eco friendly?

I will choose the following concept along the lines of recent Mazda Superlight weight reduction and recent Hydrogen Fuel cell concepts.

WEIGHT

There is of course the obvious benefits of lightweight for performance and the requirement for less fuel to propel lighter vehicles. This also assists in handling, braking, less wear on components etc etc. From the FD3s point of view of weight, the best we could hope for is approximately the 850kg mark. Going to extremes resulting in weight reductions from items like carbon brakes, prop and driveshafts, utilisation of titanium for all bolts and the previously tried Aluminium body panels in construction. LED lighting, thinner plastics(friendly versions) and removal of unneccessary items. All incredibly expensive of course.

Exterior modifications must include the following dry carbon items. Bonnet, front & rear bumpers, front fenders, doors and rear hatch. Mirrors, perspex windows and a thin front glass screen. Wheels would probably be similar to Dymag carbon magnesium items. Inside including a taiki style minimalist dash and carbon seats. All of these are currently available so you could look take the first step towards eco friendliness even if power remained kick arse Fuel Hungry Turbo 13b REW.

POWER

The RX-8 Hydrogen concept is good news for rotary engine lovers. This has been in testing for a while and these dual fuel cell vehicles, are extremely kind producing only H2O on Hydrogen (yes I know its unfriendly to make atm). The renesis rotary engines have the ability for electric assist turbocharging also which can bring back the performance lost to burning less dense Hydrogen. About 50% less power at the moment on the RX8. I do not think the electric motor is the answer for us rotary enthusiasts or anyone.

Lastly, a sunroof model should be chosen and filled with solar panels powering additional items and you can feel the earth's harsh sun roasting your head just to let you know you are helping.

So is a Hydrogen RE Turbo FE3s a possibility. Give it 20 years, then I might be retrofitting some crazy fuel cell powerlant into a lightweight chassis. Or maybe they could invite me to make the first one. Give me a call Mazda.

Mini FD3s Rx7 Replicas

Today I was walking around the stores and found this on the sale bench for 100Yenners.
So as much as I hate the pink, It will make a great car to re-paint. They went to the trouble to make clear lights then painted 4 silver spots on the out side... go figure??

So I lined it up with my yellow Initial D FD that I got from atop the japanese coffee cans. It's a little monster. I haven't detailed the windows yet but it will look cool. Has a big diffuser pro out back too.

The next one is the blue D1 RE-Amemiya phone strap FD I got from 2009 Tokyo Auto Salon. I always get some kind of souvenier when I go. It's pretty cool but the wheel detail has nothing on my other one.

The last green one is a modified Initial D FD I've had for years. It used to look exactly like my old RE-Xtreme Ver2 FD but now it looks more like a drift hack. It's on my house key ring.

RE-Xtreme Mazda Taiki Concept

Mazda's new concept features the next generation Sports car. The Taiki.

But it's not so road ready.

RE-Xtreme Tuned concept raises the performance of the new Renesis 16x 1.6lt rotary with power figure of 400 solid horsepower. Weight is 850kg for ultimate performance.

I look forward to seeing the actual car at the tokyo motor show.

Veilside Fortune FD

This the Fortune #2 car prepared for the Paris Tuning show. Yokomaku-san volunteered to expand his reach to europe with Newera's help.

Here is an extract of an interview with the designer himself which provides a bit of an isight into the process.

"I never draw concepts on paper before I start to shape. The ideas and inspiration are all here in my head. I can shape and create a design directly by hand as a 3D full sized design. Really, I find I work best like this - and this is how I've shaped all my designs from the beginning. The process for making a design starts with foam, which is used to make the initial shape. By shaving it, I can get a clear shape. Next, I cover the foam shapes in glass fibre, which gives the shape rigidity and is like putting a bandage over one's skin. "
Once the glass fibre's hardened, I apply clay - and this allows me to shape to exactly how I want the car to be. Then, once that stage is completed, I spray the bodywork with primer, so I can check and completely erradicate any minor imperfections. Upon completion of the design, I use the 3 dimensional plotter to log the complete shape of the design to within 0.1mm. With this data, I can re-create the work by reversal of the operation. I can also use the 3 dimensional plotter to enable me to get exact symmetry between each side of the design and so get a perfect design as I complete it."

We saw this car in preparation in 2004 and there is a feature on Fast East and Extreme.
